Spring Break '09 Recap

Spring Break was winding up this time last week... finally getting around to posting about it!
(This has been a busy week finishing up one calling to start a new one. This week there was an Enrichment Meeting I was in charge of as a counselor in the Ward Relief Society Presidency- and now that it's done, I've been released. I have been called as Assistant Stake Camp Director and we had a big meeting this week for that as well- and I'm trying to play catch up there since meetings have been happening for a couple of months already. Anyhow- enough of that...)

So- Spring Break. We spent most of the time at home this year, relaxing & playing with friends. I relished in the lack of a schedule. The kids woke up in the mornings and snuck downstairs, trying to be as quiet as possible (except for Jackson) to allow me to sleep in. I think they knew if I got up I'd tell them to turn off the TV and computers, get ready for the day and clean a room or two. Smart kids tried to get me to sleep in as long as possible. It worked. Cleaning and organizing did not happen. We did throw in a few fun away-from-home activities so I didn't feel like a complete loser mom. ;)

Kobe's Cub Scout troop had a special tour of the local police station over break. They got to learn about how so many people get arrested for being too drunk at the Bills games, how the police practice sharp shooting in the Bills Stadium (not on game days of course), and how if someone wanted to fly a plane into the Bills Stadium, there's not much they can do to stop it. Nice. They got to look in the police car and learn that the back seats are hard plastic seats so if a criminal vomits or urinates back there, they can just hose it down. Nice. They got to stand in smelly jail cells and learn about how bad some of the people they bring in smell. Nice. The boys got to ask questions of the officer like, "Have you ever caught a terrorist?" and "How fast does your car go?" The most important thing I learned is that if a police car is traveling in front of me, he's still monitoring my speed. Gotta remember that. ;) Kobe had a good time!

On the warmest day of the week, which wasn't too warm anyway, we took a little trip to the Buffalo Zoo.
Kobe brought along his Webkinz Buffalo to visit the zoo buffaloes. There were lots of kids around when we got there, so he was a little shy to hold up his Webkinz. We snuck a quick picture though.
The zoo has a rainforest building, "Rainforest Falls", which the kids really enjoyed with waterfalls and exotic animals and birds.
Jackson fell in love with the Sea Lions for some reason. Every time they'd swim by he'd say, "Awww" , as if they were the cutest animal he's ever seen.End of the day with a snack and drink for the ride home...

We also took a couple of trips to the school playground. They got a new one this year and Kobe's been dying to try out the part that is reserved for the 3-5 grades. (He's in 2nd.) Everyone enjoyed our time there- especially Jackson who I had to carry to the car kicking and screaming when it was time to go.

The girls and I had a little adventure of our own, using a spa gift certificate Greg got me almost a year ago and was about to expire. We scheduled manicures! The girls were so excited for this and quite enjoyed the experience. After watching the pedicures nearby, Jillie is dying to try that some day. Reagan was pleased that she could get french tips.On the way home they insisted they needed haircuts, so we stopped in for those as well.

Jillie with bangs...and Reagan, short again...

It was a nice week and one that was difficult to come back from. No one wanted to go back to school. Everyone says they are ready for summer vacation. Counting down the days til June 24th. (Yes, we are in school THAT long!!)

Sunny's Day

Another one of my favorite people is celebrating her birthday today-
(1994)
My sister Sunny!

Too bad for her I'm a creature of habit. I checked the post I wrote for her birthday last year and here's something I wrote in it...

"Sunny- unfortunately I was a little late getting your gift in the mail... and I'm a little late posting this... but I hope your day has been fabulous!"

Well guess what?! Sadly it applies this year too. I guess our late night phone call really put me behind in getting this post done!

So let's get to it...

33 RANDOM FACTS ABOUT SUNNY...

1. Her middle name is Casandra.

2. She is skinny- and will always be the skinny sister.

3. Some of her skinniness is probably due to her frugality. She doesn't splurge on junk food.

4. She is so frugal, and a bit of a hoarder, but she's learning to toss things or at least give them away.
5. She is so frugal that she considered going out in public like this.

One pair had a lost shoe, one had a broken shoe. Luckily she found the lost shoe and I HOPE she got rid of the broken pair.
6. Her and Derek's frugality made buying their first house possible this year!

7. They have the cutest little blond hair, blue eyed little man named Hyrum.
8. At Christmas time she set out to recreate the molasses cookies our Great Great Grandma Pearl used to make. She found a recipe that seemed to be the right one and made them with the help of our Mom, Grandma and Great Great Aunt Byrdie.{Back: Grandma Pauline, Great Great Aunt Byrdie. Front: Mom, Sunny, Hyrum}

9. Sunny has a passion for family history.

10. Sunny is a gardening pro. Last summer she maintained 2 gardens. They were in an apartment then, so the gardens were in some friends yards!

11. Sunny is a sewing pro too. She once made the cutest little graduation cap and gown that an 11 month old Jillie wore to Greg's college graduation.

12. She has encouraged the artistic talents of our Dad and her husband by commissioning art work from them.

13. After harvesting raspberries last summer she made her own fruit leather.

14. She also canned a lot of her garden harvest.

15. She can eat a box of mac 'n cheese all by herself.

16. She also loves white rice with butter and soy sauce.

17. Her favorite restaurant is Olive Garden.

18. Her favorite snack is popcorn and she usually eats it like someone might come behind her at any moment and swipe the bowl from her if there's any left.

19. She is a happy girl- usually. :)

20. She used to be very flexible, and probably still is.
21. She could fit in the smallest spaces22. She has always felt at home in nature.23. She enjoys camping in the mountains.

24. She has been on a couple of handcart treks at Martin's Cove in full pioneer attire in the summer heat.

25. She isn't bothered too much by extreme temperatures. Or at least she cares more about saving money. Her heat is turned up to a whopping 50* even in the winter and the air conditioner only comes on if it it's over 100*.

26. She has put a lot of work in to her new house already since the walls and trim were all painted in peach, yellow, and purple- like this...

Dad flew out to help too and they've turned this......in to this...27. Her nieces and nephews think she's a wonderful aunt!28. She once lit off illegal fireworks in an Iowa field on New Year's Eve. 29. She has inherited Grandma Nellie's energy and enthusiasm. I didn't realize til recently looking at this picture how much they look alike.30. Sunny is giver of meaningful gifts.
31. Sunny has had Church callings in Primary, Relief Society, and most recently Young Women's. She dying to get a calling in their new ward since they have been there since March without callings.
32. Sunny has a strong and unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
33. She's as cute as ever!

Happy Birthday Sun!!!

Easter Weekend Blowout!

FRIDAY:
We started out our Easter Weekend with the first day of Spring Break. I spent the morning blowing out eggs for decorating. Some people have questioned why I do that instead of boiling them, since it is more time consuming. Jillie's the only one here who really likes to eat hard boiled eggs. Not that he ever liked that type of egg, but in the last 6-7 years Greg developed an allergy to eggs. But my biggest reason blow out and not boil is so they can be used as Easter decorations. Who wants to make pretty eggs and hide them in the fridge anyway? So next year, find a large needle or a nail and poke a hole in the end of an egg. Gently swirl the nail around in there to break up the yolk. Poke a hole in the other end as well. Now, blow. Yes, it looks gross. Some about make you pass out from blowing so hard. Breaking the yolk is important to staying conscious. :)I used to make french toast out of the blown out material, til the family decided it was just too gross!Rinse eggs, blow any water out, and you're ready to decorate.
You can tell we have some "tweens" in the family as evidenced by the David Archuleta eggs.
SATURDAY:
The Easter Bunny arrived over night! He brought Jackson a Webkinz Jr. dog that Jackson has named "G". Kobe got a Webkinz lemur who is now called "King Julien" after the character in Madagascar. The Easter Bunny hacked into the girls Stardoll sites to renew their Superstar status.
Then the hunt. We had to hunt early since Jillie and I went to the Palmyra Temple on a youth temple trip.(Jillie and her friend Corinne walking up to the temple)
(Jillie and I at the temple.)

Jillie got to do some family names (baptisms and confirmations). Mom sent out 12 female names and I think 7 males. Our Bishop's grandson did the men. They had Jillie wait until everyone else was done to do her baptisms. When she got out of the font she sat in a chair right there by the font for the confirmations. I felt especially excited for the 5 (?) sisters Jillie was baptized for today. I imagined them all together and so excited that Jillie did this for them.

SUNDAY:
After church was the usual plethora of pictures of everyone in their new clothes...
Our friends- The Lewis' and The Christensen's- came over in the afternoon for dinner. We had 6 adults and 12 kids. Good food. Good times! (And I was happy with how the egg centerpieces looked on the tables!)After dinner was the Easter Egg Hunt. Since we began celebrating Easter with these families a few years ago, we've added some money to the eggs per their traditions. Our kids couldn't be happier that some eggs have cold hard cash in them. Most of the kids are old enough now that they couldn't care less about the candy- just the money! Jillie figured out that she should just walk around shaking eggs and only keep the ones that rattled.Checking the loot- adding up the money!

It was another wonderful Easter Day. Most importantly we are so thankful for the amazing gift given to us by our selfless, perfect Older Brother, Jesus Christ, so that we might live again with our Father in Heaven.

Cub

Guess who had his first day as a Cub Scout?

When he got his shirt, Kobe kept asking if that was what everyone else would be wearing, and they'd all be wearing scarves, and if they have the same book, if he needed a pocket knife, etc. So he went... a little nervously though. When he walked through the church doors one of his friends, Brett, was waiting for him with a piece of gum to welcome him to scouts. Very nice. They had fun playing soccer tonight and next week will be a trip to a police station. Not too bad. He had lots of fun. I listened in on one of the boys saying the closing prayer tonight. In it he asked that "no one would get in an accident on the way home and have their car smashed into a million pieces." Now that's a cub scout prayer! I'm glad he gets his time now to hang out with the boys, doing things that boys do, working on his scouting and Faith in God goals, and building stronger relationships with his church friends.

Oh! One more thing that I found in looking back through my files... If you need a little smile check out Kobe's version of the Napoleon Dynamite dance. It's posted on his blog.

8 is Great!

Happy 8th Birthday Kobe!
1. Kobe is the coolest 8 year old boy that I know.

2. He has the best dimples.
3. He always reminds us to have family prayer.

4. He Eats. So. Much. Food. All. Day. Long.

5. His favorites this year are Star Wars/Clone Wars, Indiana Jones, collecting Disney pins, Wii, basketball, swimming, and singing & dancing to High School Musical 3 songs (just the guy songs!). He sleeps with my iPod every night listening to "Celebrate You" by Corbin Bleu.

6. I've been told by his teacher that he is very good student, an excellent writer, and a leader who by example encourages the other kids to be obedient and respectful. (He also has excellent handwriting!)
7. He is a creator of art. (See more here)8. He loves his parents, sisters (even though he can really be the "annoying little brother" some times!) and especially loves and protects his little brother.

This year he had his birthday on Saturday. We had to miss about an hour of General Conference to get the party in, but that's what happens when your birthday is April 6th! He chose to have a laser tag party. We scheduled the party at a place where Kobe had been at a friend's party before. I'd never seen it til we got there Saturday. I thought the place was kind of lame, but Kobe thought the party was great, and that's all that matters. :) He invited some friends from school and they played laser tag; had pizza, pop, and cake; opened presents; climbed the rock wall; and played arcade games. How more "boy" to you get than that?!

(waiting for laser tag)

(Reagan was the only one from our family who tried the rock wall.)

(Jillie playing arcade games)

(Kobe with his stash of arcade tickets)

The cake: Kobe went through many design changes as we planned his cake. (He's got so many creative ideas swimming around in his head sometimes!!) First he wanted a big white sheet cake from the store "like all of my friends have at their parties." (*heart breaking*) I finally convinced him to let me make it and he could design it how he wants it as usual. By bedtime the night before the party, he was still changing his plans. He knew he wanted lots of his Star Wars figures on the cake. We narrowed it down to a few of similar size and design. He chose a rectangular cake (2- 9x13's stacked), chocolate cake with blue frosting. (The good guys in Star Wars have blue light sabers.) Then he wanted the Star Wars The Clone Wars logo on the cake with something on the side like "Kobe Skywalker vs. Darth Vader." After he was asleep Greg and I decided on "KOBE-wan Kenobi". In the end I think he was happy enough with it.
For his school treat today Kobe brought cupcakes. This too was a complicated decision for him. As we stood in the cake decorating aisle at the craft store, he went through many options trying to find something that would please both the boys and the girls. Finally he requested that I make blue cupcakes with blue frosting and he wanted these little Sponge Bob sugar thingys on them with white nonpareils to look like bubbles in the water. Done.

Not too much complicated work in the birthday cake making department this year. This is probably for the best so I didn't have to miss out on too much sleep. :)

So now Kobe is 8 years old. This week he starts Cub Scouts. I think he's a little unsure about this. Greg's not a fan of scouts, so Kobe doesn't know if he's going to like it or not. I'm betting he'll have a good time with his church friends! As for his baptism... (in our Church we are baptized at 8 years old). He's waiting until May so it's easier for family to come in for it- and celebrate Greg's 40th birthday at the same time!

We're just really glad to have Kobe in our family. We are so proud of him and love him like crazy!

"Where's My Rick?"

This is the question Jackson has asked everyday since Rick (Greg's brother) came for a visit this past week.

Greg plays basketball on a league team and they were down a player- and looking to have a win. Let me explain that Greg is a good ball player. He is used to winning. He loves the game. But as age creeps up on him, he gets a little frustrated that he can't quite do everything he could in his early 20's. Now his team of nearly 40 year olds is playing against some 20 year olds. They hold their own, but Greg was looking for a big win. He needed to find a ringer. ;) So he calls his brother, Rick (who lives exactly 1540.16 miles away) and asks if he can fly him to New York to play in a game this week. Happily Rick agreed. Crazy? Yes, but anything to get these two brothers to spend some time together is a good thing in my book. They've played ball together their whole lives- along with their other 3 brothers and their dad. Basketball is a Garrick family tradition... sometimes it's the glue that keeps them together. :) After his long flight here, the first thing Rick did, before even walking into the house, was to play with the kids outside. They became instant friends with their uncle who they haven't seen in over two years! (Yes. Two whole years! Sad isn't it?)
After play time was over, we headed out for dinner at a Japanese hibachi restaurant, which was really just more fun!(Greg caught his!)(Jackson was not too happy to "get all wet" by this little guy!)
The next day the big kids went off to school and that meant Jackson got "his Rick" all to himself on a gloomy rainy day. (Actually Jillie was home sick, but Jackson was Rick's shadow for the day!) They played lots of games and read lots of books.
We did take Rick out for a little look around our area before Reagan and Kobe got home. Can't tell you how nice it was to make dinner while everyone was kept busy by their Uncle Rick.
Lots of basketball was played......with a break or two to write in chalk whenever Jackson demanded it.That night was game night. It was like a star had come to town. Greg talked up his brother's abilities on the court so much that a couple of his friends came just to watch.(Greg and Rick leave for the big game)
In the end, they played a good game, but failed to capture the win.

Morning brought sad goodbyes from all of the kids as they left for school.
After everyone was in school, I took Rick for a quick visit to Niagara Falls.

Now he has that one checked off the ol' bucket list. I enjoyed spending time with him while he was here too. It was nice to catch up a bit with him. I'm not a great hostess, but I hope he was comfortable and had as good a time as we had having him here.

Thank goodness they are planning a trip to New York this summer for a baseball tournament that his son Danny's playing in. We plan to take a little trip out there to see Danny play and visit with the whole family.

BIG THANKS to my sister in law Kristin and their kids Danny and Jewel for letting us have Rick for a few days!! (Especially since the last day was their anniversary!) See you this summer! :)

Buffalo

We have lived in Buffalo for 3.5 years now. Except for the taxes, I like it here. (I really HATE the taxes here.) The landscape is beautiful and it is rich in history- US History as well as Church history. I've been thinking about how much I did not enjoy history classes during my school days, but it interests me more and more these days. Seeing history up close, learning the stories about the people who made the history, and walking where they walked has made it come to life more for me I suppose.

I am in love with the architecture I see around our home and in the downtown area. Back in it's heyday, Buffalo was home to many millionaires. You can still drive downtown and see the ornate and expansive mansions on Delaware Ave. City Hall has a very cool art deco feel. We even have a Frank Lloyd Wright house (complex, actually) in Buffalo. Who knew?

I've also learned some presidential history too. Buffalo (actually East Aurora, the village just down the street from ours) was home to Millard Fillmore. Grover Cleveland lived here as mayor of Buffalo. President McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo at the Pan American Expo of 1901. Teddy Roosevelt was inaugurated here following McKinley's death.

These last two facts I learned about thanks to an excellent school program (financed of course by those outrageous taxes.) Every year our fifth graders put on a musical play. Every student is required to participate. Some get bit by the acting bug, others never return to the stage, but at least they tried it out. This year's play (written by one of the teachers) was about the Pan American Expo of 1901. I had no idea there had been an historic world's fair right here! Reagan got to play the part of an Hawaiian dancer. She looks like a native Hawaiian doesn't she? ;)

The Pan American Expo's cutting edge technology of the day was the lighting of the building's exteriors. Thanks to Niagara Falls, they had the electrical power sufficient to do this. It is said there were tears in the people's eyes when the grounds were lit each night. They'd never seen such a thing.
Another piece of cutting edge technology on display at the Expo was the x-ray machine. When McKinley was shot, they couldn't find the bullet in his body, but thought it best to not dig around too much for it, for fear of doing more damage. The doctor who operated (who was actually an gynecologist!) decided not to use the x-ray machine because he did not know what effect it might have on the president. Ironically too, with all of the exterior lighting, there were no electric lights in the operating room. They couldn't use candlelight because of the flammable ether used to keep the president unconscious. So the doctors were forced to use pans to reflect sunlight onto the operating table.

Anyhow, the 5th graders put on an educational and entertaining show. The opening act was awesome- because it featured our Reagan in a duet!

And later on, she danced a hula...

She did a great job. We're so proud of her!
